First Chilean’s geopark ‘Kütralcura’

Thursday, 21 April, 2011

In Melipeuco, Araucanian Region, South of Chile on 13 th of April 2011 first Chilean geopark was proclaimed by regional, local and native authorities. At same time a geocientific and cultural symposium about geoparks and geoturism was held for four days with excursions into the active volcanics and native forests. Seems that humanity  on whole earth rediscovered the value of  real impressive landscapes, formed by geological events and the strong relationship between vegetation, inhabitants and animals. There exist a global spirit of protection, but combined with comercial interests.

Chileans Geological Survey Sernageomin put this new project in advance. To develop Kütralcura (native “firerock”) geopark next two years for turism, education and science. If this project “works”, a couple of new claimed GeoSites from Chile will get the real chance  to be transformed into ‘geoparks’ next years.
